What is a Reach Truck?
Reach Fork Truck Information
Many warehouse managers are looking to optimize their space. A Reach truck is a good way to increase storage capacity by up to 30%.
A reach truck is a forklift, originally invented by the Lyon Iron Works to optimize space in a warehouse environment. By being able to extend its length and “reach” out to pick up loads, then retract its pantograph and become smaller, the Reach truck is able to save 3 to 4 feet per storage aisle.
Reach Truck Aisle Requirement
Many reach trucks require a minimum or 92″+ of clear aisle to store and retrieve pallets. The aisle may increase in size for the following:
- Sideshift adds 2″ to the aisle requirement
- Moving from 24 volts to a 36 volt platform increases the aisle requirement by another 2″
- Increasing capacity from 3,000 lbs to 4,000 lbs will increase the aisle by a further 2″
- Give yourself a further 6″-12″ for extra maneuverability
- Don’t forget that the pallet overhangs racking by 3″ on either side, so the rack to rack dimension will be 6″ wider than the clear aisle dimension.
How wide of an aisle does a Reach Truck need?
Using the guide above, for a 3,000 lbs capacity, 36 volt reach truck with sideshift, a 102″ minimum clear aisle or a 108″ rack to rack aisle is indicated.
